Since 2018

A cart, a lever
and a lot of
stubbornness.

Velem Café started with one machine on a pavement and a promise: honest coffee, poured slowly, for people we know by name. Eight years later the pavement is a shop and the promise hasn't changed.

What we fuss over

  • Sourced kindly

Single-origin beans bought direct from farms in Rwanda, Ethiopia and Brazil at above-market prices.

  • Roasted weekly

40kg a week in small batches out the back, so nothing in your cup is older than seven days.

  • Made for everyone

Oat, almond and coconut milk at no extra charge, plus a full caffeine-free menu that isn't an afterthought.

How we got here

  1. 2018

Two friends, one hand-pulled lever machine and a cart outside the corner deli.

  2. 2020

Bags of beans delivered by bicycle keep the lights on through a very quiet year.

  3. 2022

The Bree Street shop opens with a roaster in the back room and 9 seats.

  4. 2026

Twelve drinks on the menu, 3.5k regulars and a strawberry matcha people queue for.
